WHY DO I NEED AN ENDOSCOPY PROCEDURE?
An Endoscopy is a procedure used for the purpose of looking inside a patient. There are many different types of endoscopy procedures that are specific to different areas of the body. Examples include Arthroscopy, which looks at joints, Bronchoscopy, which looks at the trachea and bronchi, and the most well-known, Colonoscopy, which looks at the colon and large intestine. Most forms of Endoscopy don’t require surgery so there aren’t cuts or stitches needed. An endoscope is a tool used to see inside the human body. They come in various sizes to fit in different areas of the body. Because of their purpose to see inside the body, the tools used are built for their work. They can easily be put in through various orifices of the body, which, again, eliminates the need for incisions in most cases.
In simple terms, someone would get a GI endoscopy if their doctors were interested in getting a better look inside the patient, but wanted to remain non-invasive. For example, if the doctor wanted to take a better look at your esophagus, he or she could use an endoscope to take a peek. Endoscopes are used for more than preventative care as they can also be used for minor invasive surgeries. The endoscope used in a colonoscopy has additional capabilities that allow it to not only feed video to your doctors, but also has special tools to remove polyps and tissue that could be cancerous. Other reasons might include when an imaging test doesn’t show what doctors need, or to look for cancer signs early.
